The Bulk Nursery has since the nineteen fifties been known as The Nursery for Special Plants. Since then, a wide range of unusual shrubs and trees has been grown here. In 2000 Mark Bulk took over his father's company and Anne joined in 13 years later. Now Mark and Anne run the nursery together with great passion for rare plants, the assortment and nature.
By cultivating a wide range of plants and no use of pesticides, we have very little trouble with diseases and harmful insects. There simply is a natural balance. Many different flowers provide food for insects at different times of the year and in the large mother plant and grass areas rodents, birds and even small reptiles can shelter.
A great part of our plants are grown in the open ground. Therefore we keep our soil in shape by spreading mulch and by sowing green fertilizer on a different part of the nursery every year. All work is done in traditional ways, without large machines or heavy tools. For the rest we try to avoid the use of peat in our potting soil and our container plants are growing in organic and/or peatfree substrates.
We supply mainly wholesale companies with our trees, shrubs and permaculture plants; specialized garden centres, plant traders, botanical gardens, arboreta, landscaping gardeners in whole Europe. But collectors and everyone else who loves plants is welcome!
You are welcome to visit us! We only ask you to remember that we are a nursery and no garden centre. Therefore we do not have any direct sales or time to give advice. Anyways you are welcome to get inspiration, write down plants you fancy and hand in a written request for a later collection.
Growing organically? Yes! Certification? Not quiet yet.
We believe in real biology, ecology, the nature and dynamics. That's why we do it. Unconditional: No pesticides, no artificial fertilizers and responsible potting soil. We follow our conviction and ideology in this. Why not getting certified as organic grower? Because the regulations currently require too much time from us! We fulfil the regulations of biology already, just without the label. Plants that we buy in are not always organic. That's why they don't get a checkmark in our stock list. All other plants are marked with a check. For clarification. With a checkmark means: “natural, responsible and entirely grown with resources that doe belong in nature.So why do we buy these plants?
Because we love the assortment and some colleagues grow the most beautiful plants. On this way we can offer a more complete selection than the one we can grow ourselves. Only some of those colleagues are not that far yet in terms of sustainability.
